John attended Fredonia State College where he played two seasons of SUNYAC basketball before leaving college to enter the New York State Police Academy in 1987.  John has recently retired from the NY State Police after a 20-year career and is teaching Criminal Justice classes at Bryant & Stratton College and Hilbert College.

John is beginning his 5th year coaching the Buffalo Defenders and is the girl's Varsity basketball coach at North Tonawanda High School. In 2007, his 12u Defenders' team played in the AAU DII National Championships in Minnesota and in 2008 his 13u Defenders' team played in the AAU DII National Championships in Tennessee. His philosophy toward the game of basketball is one in which he encourges his players to work hard to continually improve on an individual level, while emphasizing the importance of being good teammates. He stresses the significance of excellent conduct on and off the court, and believes that his players must work hard to excel in the classroom, as well as on the basketball court.
